Fireworks on sale in Washington through July 5

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Fireworks went on sale Thursday in Washington and will be permitted through July 5.

The state fire marshal's office says 900 licenses were issued for retail fireworks stands.

Fire Marshal Charles Duffy and other authorities are urging users to be careful. Over the Fourth of July holiday in 2001, fireworks were responsible for 212 injuries and 264 fires that caused losses estimated at $569,000. People can leave the fireworks to the experts at more than 100 professional displays on the Fourth of July around Washington.

The state Department of Natural Resources reminds holiday hikers and campers that it is illegal to discharge fireworks on public and private lands protected by agency firefighters.

And, the Washington State Patrol reminds ferry riders to be prepared to show fireworks detected by bomb-sniffing dogs.
