Mobile Phone ? Features & Benefits of Mobile Communication ...

Mobile phone?

A mobile phone is a device used to make phone calls over a large geographical area. It does this thing by connecting the mobile phone with the cellular operator. Today?s smartphones offer many features like Bluetooth, infrared, sms, mms etc. Mobile phones that offer these and more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones.

The first hand-held mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing around 2.2 pounds (1 kg).

There are many benefits of a mobile phone. We can stay connected to anyone. The most basic benefit of a cell phone for which most of us use it is that we can stay connected with our loved ones in any part of the world and anytime. Gone are the days when we used to stand in queues to make an STD or ISD calls. You can talk to your loved ones staying even seven seas far with cell phones. They are a great way to contact someone in an emergency. Imagine you are stuck in a traffic jam, getting late for a meeting or your car has broken down in middle of nowhere. Cell phones are of great use in time of such emergencies. You can contact help with the use of cell phone easily. Nowadays modern cell phones have many capabilities. They can provide entertainment. With a cell phone in your hand, you don?t need a TV or PC to get entertained. It is all in your cell phone. You can play games, listen to music, and click pictures and even record videos in your cell phone.

Mobile phones today have capabilities to transfer data through blue tooth and infrared. Now you do not need to log on to computer for transferring pictures and videos to another phone.it just take seconds to transfer a file from one phone to another through Bluetooth and Infrared.

Parents now can stay little less worried about their children. By giving mobile phone to their children they can call them from anywhere and anytime.

Mobile phones also provide the user the confidence to get out and go places because they know they can avail assistance if needed. The cost of the mobile phones is similar to other models of communication.

Nowadays, cell phones have become a matter of prestige and fashion. A person having a better mobile phone is considered a prestigious person especially among youth of today?s generation. A person having better or a more expensive cell phone can definitely impress others.

Nowadays, mobile phones have the capabilities of using them worldwide. Now no matter the distance you can use cell phone to stay in touch with dear ones.

Modern mobile phone users have the capability of seeing stock prices. They can buy and sell stocks through it. They can monitor the rates of market through it.

Mobile communication devices can offer freedom and independence and are an excellent way for young people to communicate with friends. As the technology improves, they are increasingly becoming a good source of entertainment. They provide important safety benefits too, enabling a young person to make contact and be contacted, and can also act as a location finder for emergency services.

Android Army: US soldiers to leverage portable battlefield network and smartphones

Android US Army soldiers to leverage portable battlefield network and smartphones

Smartphones: the future of wartime communication? That is the goal of the US Army through the development of its portable wireless network, dubbed Warfighter Information Network-Tactical or WIN-T. The Army hopes to leverage WIN-T to bring near-instant digital communication to the battlefield by outfitting soldiers with Motorola Atrix handsets running a heavily modified version of Android. An exposé by Wired explains that the system's main goal is information and intelligence sharing; between both soldiers and central command. Friendly troop positions, suspicious vehicles or persons and surveillance video from unmanned areal vehicles (UAVs) can all be mapped and shared with servicemen and women in the field. It's been a dream of the Pentagon since the mid-nineties, but has only recently become monetarily and technologically feasible due to advances in smartphone processing power. It's nerdy, it's fascinating... and this is the stuff the Army is willing to talk about. Hit the source link for the full write-up.

Some Dems still skittish on health care; GOP riled

(AP) ? The constitutional win for President Barack Obama and Democrats on health care overhaul is reopening political cuts within the party over the unpopular law.

Four months to an election with control of Congress in the balance, the Supreme Court's affirmation of the law left several Democrats insisting that the issue was settled and it's time to focus on jump-starting a sluggish economy.

Other Democrats saw the newfound attention as a chance to reset the debate and make a fresh case for the law's more popular elements, especially as 12.8 million Americans start getting health insurance rebate checks in the coming months.

The most vulnerable Democratic incumbents and challengers ? Montana Sen. Jon Tester and North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp among them ? cautiously welcomed the court's judgment but argued that the law could be improved.

Even before Obama signed the landmark measure in March 2010, Republicans were unified in opposition and clear in their message: repeal and replace. The White House and divided Democrats have been frustrated in trying to explain and sell the law to a skeptical public in a sharp contrast to the GOP. The court's decision was a reminder of political reality.

Two years ago, grass-roots outrage over health care contributed to the Democrats losing the House majority and seven Senate seats. Republicans and outside groups promise more of the same in the campaign slog to November.

The court has "done a favor" for Republicans, freshman Rep. Allen West of Florida, who owes his seat in part to that anger, said in an interview. "Why would the Obama administration and Democrats want the pre-eminent issue of 2010 to be the pre-eminent issue of 2012?"

Conservative leader Richard Viguerie said the court's decision has raised that anger to "a revolutionary fervor that will sweep President Obama and many other Democrats from office." The Tea Party Express appealed to its supporters for money and backing to defeat Obama and "a liberal U.S. Senate that have foisted Obamacare down our throats." Outside groups, both parties and candidates have been furiously fundraising off the ruling.

In North Dakota, Crossroads GPS launched an ad Friday that calls out Heitkamp, the Democratic Senate candidate, for her support of the law and contends that it raises taxes and expands regulations. Crossroads GPS is the conservative-leaning group tied to former President George W. Bush's longtime political director, Karl Rove.

Looking to finesse a difficult issue, Heitkamp has been airing an ad that argues for the law in personal terms.

"I'm Heidi Heitkamp and 12 years ago, I beat breast cancer," she says. "When you live through that, political attack ads seem silly."

The former state attorney general, who is locked in a close race with Republican Rep. Rick Berg, said the bill has its good and bad points and needs to be fixed but that she would never deny coverage to seniors.

In suburban Chicago, Democratic candidate Tammy Duckworth said that as a survivor of a health crisis, she understands the importance of affordable health care. Duckworth, who piloted a Black Hawk helicopter in Iraq, lost both legs when her aircraft was hit in 2004.

She highlighted the popular elements of the law ? banning denial of coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, allowing children to stay on their parents' insurance until age 26, and reducing seniors' Medicare prescription drug costs by closing the "donut hole." But Duckworth complained about the law's "unfair burden on employers, especially our small businesses," and promised to address the issue if she ousts first-term Republican Rep. Joe Walsh.

Public opposition to the health care law remains high: 47 percent of respondents in a recent Associated Press-GfK poll said they oppose the law while 33 percent said they support it. Thirteen percent said they are neutral. Those who strongly oppose the legislation also outnumber those who strongly support it, 32 percent to 17 percent, about a 2-to-1 margin.

Critical to both parties, just 21 percent of independents support it, the lowest level of support the AP-GfK poll has recorded on the issue.

Much of the polling does find strong support for individual elements, like allowing young adults to remain on their parents' plan to age 26. Some Democrats see that as an opening to reframe the debate.

"I see this as a huge moment for us," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said in an interview. "Now that the benefits are kicking in, it's a lot easier to explain it."

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said the court's ruling lifts a cloud of uncertainty.

"Now the American people are going to say, 'Now what's in that for me?'" Harkin said. "As long as Democrats are willing to go out there and positively say, 'Look, now you are guaranteed that you will get affordable health insurance if you had breast cancer in the past ... preventive care, free mammograms. ... And they (Republicans) want to take it away from you. You have it now and they want to take it away from you. If you want it taken away from you, you just go ahead and vote for them.'"

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., the presidential nominee in 2004, said Democrats need to seize the chance.

"I think it's very important to do what wasn't done sufficiently before," Kerry said.

The Republican response? Bring it on.

The court ruling gave clarity to the GOP call for repeal ? electing Republican candidates in November is the only way now to ensure the law's demise. In a fundraising appeal within hours of the court announcement, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said, "Now we know ? four seats to repeal Obamacare," a reference to the net number that the GOP needs to seize the Senate majority.

Republicans also used the ruling to craft a new attack line. Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion said the law's requirement that Americans purchase health care is a tax, which Republicans argued contradicted Obama and Democrats who insist they aren't raising taxes on the poor and middle class.

"The court blew the president's cover," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

The tax debate will be at the forefront when the House votes the week of July 9 to overturn the law, a largely symbolic step with a Democratic-controlled Senate but one that will put Democrats and Republicans on record and provide fodder for the campaign.

Fireworks on sale in Washington through July 5

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Fireworks went on sale Thursday in Washington and will be permitted through July 5.

The state fire marshal's office says 900 licenses were issued for retail fireworks stands.

Fire Marshal Charles Duffy and other authorities are urging users to be careful. Over the Fourth of July holiday in 2001, fireworks were responsible for 212 injuries and 264 fires that caused losses estimated at $569,000. People can leave the fireworks to the experts at more than 100 professional displays on the Fourth of July around Washington.

The state Department of Natural Resources reminds holiday hikers and campers that it is illegal to discharge fireworks on public and private lands protected by agency firefighters.

And, the Washington State Patrol reminds ferry riders to be prepared to show fireworks detected by bomb-sniffing dogs.

July 4th in Ocean City | Arts & Entertainment | Atlantic City Weekly

One of South Jersey?s most anticipated spectacles is Independence Day at the Jersey shore. ?

For many, it?s a fixed tradition to be on the beaches and boardwalks for the shore towns? display of fireworks. Natives and vacationers to the Jersey shore can testify that America?s birth is best celebrated in sandals and a bathing suit, accompanied by a tasty boardwalk treat. ?

Ocean City?s Independence Day weekend kicks off with a romantic comedy by Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna, It Had To Be You, from Friday to Sunday (June 29-July 1) at the Ocean City Repertory Theater. The play is being directed by the founder and producing artistic director Flossi Micciolo. Asbury Avenue is pressing on this summer into its second decade with new In-House Director Eddie Shiffler, appointed by Micciolo. Shiffler was a key component in Ocean City?s 125th Anniversary celebration and will now be helping to reorganize the non-profit organization. ?

The theater has been gaining a reputation for professional material and is the first time Ocean City has an official Performance Arts Center in its downtown. ?

?We?ve discovered that there was such a need in this community for an outlet for performing arts, especially amongst the kids,? said Flossi.?

This Saturday, June 30, Ocean City is hosting the free Exchange Club Craft Show at the Music Pier. Vendors express their artistic sides and invite shoppers to check out their personal crafts that are for sale. ?

Sunday, soccer heats up at Carey Stadium where the Ocean City Nor?easters take on the Bermuda Hogges. The half-time events include a Zumba workout experience and a Euro 2012 Soccer Celebration. Meanwhile, Franklin, Tennessee composer, author and recording artist Michael Card, is playing a free concert at the Ocean City Tabernacle. Card is an American Christian singer-song writer, musician and radio host who has recorded over 31 albums and authored or co-authored over 24 books. He seeks to encourage his audiences to join in meaningful discussions with one another. ?

Sunday through Thursday, the Ocean City Pops will be presenting Crazy For You at the Hughes Performing Arts Center. In collaboration with the Ocean City Theatre Company, the musical is described as thrilling song and dance tunes of George Gershwin.?

The arts in Ocean City spill over into Monday night with Beatlemania Now: a live musical concert experience that is said to be the ultimate tribute to the Beatles. The event will be held at the Music Pier with proceeds going to benefit the Ocean City VFW Post 6650.?

America?s 236th birthday will be celebrated with two morning bike parades sponsored by the South O.C. Improvement Association and the Gardens Civic Association. Registration begins an hour before the parades at the Longport Bridge parking lot and 40th Street and Asbury Avenue. The Ocean City Tabernacle will also be having its weekly Farmer?s Market. ?

Preceding the highly anticipated fireworks display, Ocean City is also hosting a kite flying competition on the 9th Street Beach. Participants and visitors are invited to get settled in early for the fireworks by watching the skies for the kite competition. 9:30pm marks the start of Ocean City?s July 4 fireworks display on the 9th Street Beach just as Atlantic City begins its celebration to the north. Between the two islands? simultaneous fireworks shows, the skies of Independence Day eve will carry on a true American tradition at the Jersey shore.

Jury still out on "Blade Runner"

(Reuters) - While South African athlete Oscar Pistorius attempts to become the first amputee runner to compete at the Olympic Games, scientists are still arguing whether his artificial limbs give him a critical advantage or not.

Pistorius, born without fibulas and who had his lower legs amputated when a baby, uses carbon fiber prosthetic running blades and is hoping to qualify for the 400 meters at the Games.

Pistorius beat the Olympic qualifying time of 45.30 in Pretoria in March but must repeat that performance in an international meeting before June 30 to make the team for the London Games which start on July 27.

Pistorius, who has a personal best is 45.07, won the 100, 200 and 400 gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games. He also became the first amputee to compete at the athletics world championships when he ran in Daegu, South Korea last year.

"The science is fully clear that ... Mr. Pistorius runs considerably faster with his artificial limbs," said Peter Weyand, associate professor of Applied Physiology and Biomechanics at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

He said in an email that the findings, with Matthew Bundle, assistant professor at the University of Montana's Department of Health and Human Performance, also showed Pistorius had an advantage over one legged amputees.

Pistorius has already won a legal case to compete against able-bodied athletes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2008 overturned a ban which had been imposed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The court said its ruling applied only to Pistorius and only to the type of artificial limb he uses and that the IAAF had failed to prove its case.

The irony is that data used in support of Pistorius at the arbitration court came from a group which included Weyand and Bundle. They only made known their dissenting opinion later and five other scientists in the same group reject their arguments.

Icelandic company Ossur, which makes the carbon fiber limbs, and the athlete himself, are certain he has no advantage and that is it sheer hard work which is behind his success.

"I have been competing on the Ossur flex foot Cheetah since I first started in athletics in 2003," said Pistorius.

"The leg has not changed and I have not run on any other prosthetic sprinting leg. My advances in time are down to how hard I train," he added in an email.

The futuristic look of the limbs, which are curved like an upside-down hook and which affix via sockets to the stumps of his legs, have earned him the nickname "Blade Runner".

The science behind the limbs themselves is surprisingly simple and has barely changed since Pistorius first starting using them, according to Richard Hirons, a clinical prosthetist and specialist in sports feet at Ossur.

"The bottom line is that it minimizes the disadvantages," Hirons told Reuters. "He is basically on stilts, he has to take that into account, he has to think about the wind, he gets nervous when it rains.

"There is a big amount of extra effort required in the upper body to generate power, lift and compensation," he added.

CHEETAH INSPIRATION

Ossur, founded in 1971, makes many limbs and works with many Paralympians, but Pistorius is their highest profile client.

The limbs he uses, called the Flex Foot Cheetah, were developed by U.S. inventor Van Philips in the 1980s.

He had the bottom half of his left leg cut off by a motor boat when water skiing, but was a keen sportsman and was frustrated by the clunky prosthetic designs then available.

Ossur bought Philips' company in 2000 in an international expansion which has made it a leading global prosthetics firm, growing well beyond its Icelandic birthplace. Sales grew from $18 million in 1991 to $401 million in 2011.

Hirons said the limbs were curved carbon fiber, which were specially designed for high impact sports. The company also produces limbs with a more gentle curve for joggers, as well as feet and legs for daily use for ordinary people.

Also for non-athletes, the future is bionic limbs, combining small electronic motors and computer sensors.

Despite the findings of Weyand and Bundle, Ossur says the carbon fiber legs are much less efficient than real legs, ankles and muscles in absorbing the impact from running and returning energy back to the runner for forward movement.

"There is a huge amount of extra effort required in the upper body to generate power and lift and compensation," Hirons said of Pistorius.

SCHOLARLY DISPUTE

Weyand and Bundle disagree, setting out their views in a debate with their five fellow scientists who worked on the Pistorius case in an issue of the journal Applied Physiology in November 2009. They say the prosthetic limbs are lighter than legs and allow Pistorius to take quicker strides.

That meant he spent more time getting tread on the ground and less in the air, which in turn meant his athleticism needed to be less than able-bodied runners to reach the same speeds.

"We conclude that the moment in athletic history when engineered limbs outperform biological limbs has already passed," the two men wrote.

In a rebuttal, the other five scientists completely disagreed, writing that it was "common sense that amputation and prosthetic legs impair force generation".

They said the rapid leg swings could have resulted from training and Pistorius having to compensate for his disability.

Weyand told Reuters that he stuck to his views, which he said were backed up by scientific data.

While the scientists debate, Pistorius is still working to achieve his Olympic goal, though has fallen short so far.

"I have worked hard to achieve the Olympic qualification time - I have already run this time twice and my aim is to consistently run within this time ahead of the Olympics and I hope to be selected to represent South Africa," he told Reuters.

The Crucial Components of a Really Good Roofing System for ...

When it pertains to roofing systems, what most Michigan homeowners typically see is simply the exterior surface of the roof. In reality, making it actually takes a lot of time and research to get it right. A really good roof makes a great home, and putting in time and also effort in to making the best roof covering system is well worth it.

The first step in making a roofing system is considering where you live. Your area identifies the design of the roof covering that you're going to apply, among other considerations. As an example, if your neighborhood gets a lot of snow or rainfall, a steep-pitched roof covering that enables water and snowfall to run-off might just be more preferable than a flat roof covering.

Insulation. A good home will certainly have the ability to keep you cool even when the weather is like a desert outside, and it is able to keep you warm even when the whole state is covered in snow. This is made possible by your home's insulation, which should be a significant element of your roofing system design factors. The kind of framing that you're going to utilize, as well as the insulation product, will definitely figure out how energy-efficient your home would be.

Ventilation. If the crawl space, which is directly below the roof covering, isn't well ventilated, mold could certainly grow and can induce health risks to you and your household. Additionally, the temperature in an attic with flawed air flow will leak in to the roof covering during cold months, causing the snow to melt and leak into the house. Air flow works with insulation in making your residence energy-efficient.

Materials. The components your roof covering is made from can determine just what type of maintenance it demands, precisely how often it needs checking, and just how long it's going to last. You could pick from conventional elements like lumber, clay, aluminum, or metal. Detroit roofing service providers, as an example, could also hook you up with green roof coverings and other eco-friendly solutions.

Model. Lastly, you should consider the curb appeal of the roof. Does it look too scattered when viewed from afar? How much of an overhang should the roof have to be useful without being shabby? Michigan roofing companies could provide you their expert viewpoint on issues like these.

The majority of Michigan roofers are respected people, though it never hurts to be more careful. You're going to be paying a whole lot of cash for this; it only makes sense to do a background check on the roofing contractors. N.S. doctor urges methadone alternative | Health X Pert Articles ...

That morning cup o' joe or mid-afternoon coffee pick-me-up may play a role in keeping your heart healthy, depending on how much you drink. A meta-analysis of five previously completed prospective studies finds that drinking two 8-ounce cups of coffee a day gives people an 11% lower risk of developing heart failure, compared to people who don't consume any coffee. The analysis, published in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation: Heart Failure, reviewed five studies conducted between 2001 and 2011 and included a total of 140,220 patients. "Heart failure shares risk factors with other cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes are particularly strong risk factors for heart failure," explains Elizabeth Mostofsky, the first author of the analysis and a post doctoral research fellow at the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "We think coffee is lowering the risk for diabetes which is lowering the risk for heart failure." But don't reach for the coffee pot just yet. Drinking two cups of coffee may help prevent heart failure but Mostofsky and her colleagues found that drinking more than four cups a day seems to undermine?the protective quality. "Protection slowly decreases with more consumption and it seems there's no further benefit for people who drink five or more servings a day and there may actually be potential for harm," says Mostofsky. The studies that made up the analysis did not take into account if participants drank caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee. However, Mostofsky?notes that the studies were conducted in Finland and Sweden, two countries where caffeinated coffee is typically consumed. The studies also did not look at how the coffee was brewed, how strong it was, or what time of day the participants drank it. Still, the analysis jibes with previous research that shows two cups of coffee may be good for you. Last month, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study that found drinking at least two cups of coffee was linked to a longer life. For its part, the American Heart Associated recommends that patients with heart failure limit their intake to no more two 8-ounce cups of coffee or any other caffeinated beverage, a day. Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB

Although casual users and data-hungry prosumers alike will agree that anything beyond two or three terabytes is unnecessary, such large capacities are practically indispensible for businesses whose very existence is staked on data-intensive applications. The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB ($499 direct) comfortably fits in this rarefied territory. Equally worth considering is its versatility, as it supports FireWire (400 and 800), USB 2.0, and eSATA interfaces. Our current Editors' Choice for desktop-class hard drives, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) (Price, 4 stars), which, despite its smaller capacity, has a more versatile GoFlex adapter, but if capacity is your paramount consideration, it's worth considering.

Design and Features
Measuring 6.54 by 3.87 by 6.06 inches (HWD), the My Passport Studio Edition II is fairly sizeable?understandable, given that it's comprised of two 3TB drives beneath its matte-finish silver plastic chassis. Moreover, it's not nearly as bulky as others in its class, especially when one considers the unapologetically Herculean dimensions of the IoSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars). The elegant plastic chassis is elegantly unadorned, save for the soft white glow emitted by an LED activity light in the front and the reflective silver WD logos embossed on the left and right sides. Air vents sporting dot- and dash-shaped cutouts run along three sides to keep things cool while providing a nice visual contrast to the subdued exterior. A quartet of I/O interfaces can be found on the rear of the drive, consisting of a micro USB 2.0 port, a pair of daisy-chainable FireWire800 ports (also compatible with FireWire 400) and an eSATA port. Unlike the comparably-sized LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6 TB) ($749 list, 4 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support Thunderbolt. And unlike the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's (3TB) ($399 list, 3.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support USB 3.0.

The My Passport Studio Edition II comes formatted to HFS+ for use on Mac OS X systems right out of the box, but can easily be reformatted to either FAT32 or NTFS. Although its compatibility with both systems is a plus that sets it apart from the Mac-only LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series, it must reformatted, whereas the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk can simply be swapped between systems without this added procedure. Like its predecessor, the My Book Studio Edition II (2TB) ($429.99 list, 4.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II allows for reconfiguration of the RAID array from the pre-set RAID 0 array (striping, 6 TB) to RAID 1 (mirroring, 3 TB x 2) through the included WD Drive Manager software.

Though the $500 price tag attached to the My Passport Studio Edition II seems expensive at first blush, it ultimately breaks down to 8 cents per GB, making it considerably cheaper than similar drives in its class. Even taken as a whole, it's nonetheless significantly more affordable than the equally sized Lacie 2big Thunderbolt Series.

Performance
The My Passport Studio Edition II operated at a brisk pace using each of its three interfaces, but its nimble eSATA performance stole the show. Using this interface, the My Passport Studio Edition II transferred our standard 1.22GB test folder in a scant 12 seconds, the same amount of time as the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series using a Thunderbolt connection, and quicker than the Seagate GoFlex Desk's performance with USB 3.0 (15 seconds). And while the My Passport Studio Edition II still fell 2 seconds short of the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's impressive eSATA transfer rate of 10 seconds, its eSATA speed nonetheless edged past the CRU-DataPort's USB 3.0 transfer speed (14 seconds).

Even if you don't plan on utilizing an eSATA connection, the My Passport Studio still held its own against the competition. With a Mac, it transferred our test folder in an impressive 19 seconds (via FireWire 800) and 42 seconds (USB 2.0). It yielded somewhat slower results using Windows 7, clocking in at 24 seconds (FireWire 800) and 48 seconds (USB 2.0), putting it slightly behind both the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk and the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars), both of which transferred our test folder in 42 seconds under USB 2.0. Regardless of which operating system is used, the Iomega Mac Companion's FireWire 800 speed (30 seconds) was nonetheless handily outpaced by the My Passport Studio II, both in Windows and Mac environments.

Although the My Passport Studio II's PCMark 05 hard drive test scores were fairly high, particularly with eSATA (5,396), but also with USB 2.0 (3,051) and FireWire 800 (4,493), it was ultimately trounced by the CRU-DataPort TRX100-3SJ's scores of 9,023 (USB 3.0) and 8,269 (eSATA).

Ultimately, the Western Digital My Passport Studio II (6TB) has plenty of noteworthy attributes. In addition to 6TB of storage, its configurable RAID scheme and trifecta of connectivity options make for a rather flexible external desktop-class hard drive. Still, it's not nearly as versatile nor future-proofed as the Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB), which sports a GoFlex adapter and can be easily swapped between Mac and Windows operating systems without the reformatting. If capacity is your main consideration, however, then your choice ultimately boils down to the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6TB) or the My Passport Studio II. If this is the case, stick with the My Passport Studio II, because, despite its minor shortcomings, its combination of capacity and performance make it a fine choice.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II (6TB) with several other hard drives side by side.

Kodak goes picture perfect with service - Business Management Daily

When Jeffrey Hayzlett took over as Kodak?s chief marketing officer, he didn?t know much about the founding father of the company, George Eastman.

What he learned gradually, by raiding the archives and reading everything that Eastman had written, was that Eastman had been a change agent.

He?d hired one of the first female executive secretaries, when the rest of the assistants in the 1880s were men. His company?s ads were downright racy.

But through it all, he never wavered from three core tenets: serve the customer, make it easy and get close.

Hayzlett started telling anyone who would listen that Kodak?s current customer relations had to be about those three ideas. Those ideas were the foundation of the company. Kodak would fail if any changes implemented by the company?and there were more than a few being rolled out?went against those core ideas.

That realization changed the way the company connected with customers.

Kodak began asking customers this question about cameras: ?How do we make our digital cameras as easy to use as a pencil?? They discovered that 90% of users only use the default setting. So Kodak put its most popular features, like red-eye reduction, in the default setting.

Hayzlett asks, ?Are you doing this in your business? Before specialization, before marketing, before anything ? are you continually focused on service? And if so, how can you do it better??

? Adapted from Running the Gauntlet, Jeffrey Hayzlett, McGraw-Hill.

Team Canada looks to young players to carry torch

For longtime fans of the Canadian Open ? and its predecessor, the Canada Cup ? the names of national players blasted over the Softball City P.A. system were familiar ones.

In left-field and batting leadoff for Team Canada, Melanie Matthews; at second base, Kristy Odamura; at catcher, Erin Cumpstone; playing first base, Sheena Lawrick?

All were longtime fixtures in the Canadian lineup ? and some still are.

But now, a new wave of young stars is set to take centre stage when the team hits the field this weekend in South Surrey. And helping lead the youth movement are former White Rock Renegades pitchers Jocelyn Cater and Marina Demore.

Demore, who just completed her junior season at Oregon State University, and Cater, who doesn't even turn 18 until later this summer, will both be in the lineup after making the cut at a tryout camp in Oklahoma City earlier this week; the camp was followed by the World Cup of Softball.

"It's a really great experience," said Demore, who won the Canada Cup's Showcase Division as a 15-year-old with the Vancouver Wildcats.

"I used to watch this team play when I was little, and now to be playing with them, and to be a part of it, is pretty cool."

Demore didn't play for Canada at last year's event, choosing instead to return to Oregon State for the summer, but she first donned the Maple Leaf jersey at Softball City in 2010, pitching a handful of innings for Canada.

"My first game, I think it was against USA Elite, and I got thrown in for an inning or two. I was really nervous, but it was exciting," she recalled.

"That gave me a lot of confidence, and make me realize I could compete with anybody. I was out there against the best, so now, this year, I have a little bit different mindset.

"I'm definitely a lot more calm now. I've been put in big situations before, at college."

Cater, too, made a good first impression. Last year, at just 16 years old, she became the youngest player to ever suit up for Canada's national squad, when she pitched two innings against high-powered Australia. She did not allow a hit, struck out a pair, and was credited with the win.

And this year, the Maple Ridge native ? who will pitch next year at the University of Washington ? is looking to improve on that performance.

"This year, I have a more mental attitude. Last year, I just threw the ball,? said Cater, a student at North Delta?s Seaquam Secondary. ?I?m more positional with my throws, I watch the batters and see where they like to stand in the box, and study what pitches the left-handed hitters struggle with."

Batters struggled with her fastball a year ago, but she is relying on more than just her speed this season.

?I?ve developed a drop-ball/change-up,? she said earlier this month, before accompanying Team Canada to Oklahoma.

?It?s about 10 miles an hour slower than my fastball, which is good because you have to slow your pitches down every now and then.?

And while the summer is a whirlwind of travel ? from Oklahoma to South Surrey, and later this summer to Whitehorse for the women's world fastpitch championships July 12-22 ? Cater, like Demore, is excited to play in front of family and friends at the Canadian Open.

"Playing at home is so much better, you see people you know in the stands and they support our team,? she said. ?I watched the Canada Cup? when I was a kid, so I always wanted to play in a tournament like this.?

And while Cater and Demore are likely to be relied upon more heavily than in their rookie seasons with the national program, both still rely on the steadying influence of the team's veterans when it comes time to play big games. If she ever finds the nerves getting the best of her in the pitcher's circle, Demore, for example, thinks back to one of the nuggets of advice Cumpstone ? Canada's longtime catcher ? once gave her.

"She just told me to go out there and relax, and have fun. It's not any different ? it's still just a game."

Competing for fame, $1,000 and a year's worth of dog cookies, Mugly won the honor by beating out 28 other ugly dogs from around the world.

The 8-year-old rescue dog from the United Kingdom will also be invited for a photo shoot and will receive a VIP stay at the local Sheraton.

"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," said Bev Nicholson, the dog's owner. "I didn't know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog."

It's not the first time Mugly has been recognized for his unattractiveness. Nicholson said he was named Britain's ugliest dog in 2005.

The contest at the Marin-Sonoma Fairgrounds gets worldwide attention, with reporters and camera crews from around the world traveling to Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.

Organizers say the competing dogs are judged for what they term their "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."

Mugly's victory was the latest for a Chinese crested. Last year's winner, Yoda, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.

Flipboard, Another Apple Darling, Expands to Android

Yet another app that was exclusive to Apple?s mobile devices is expanding to Google?s Android platform and elsewhere. What?s unusual in particular about this app, Flipboard, is that the company behind it was co-founded by a former Apple employee who worked on the iPhone.

Flipboard, which offers a free app that reformats Web content into magazine-like pages, said on Friday that its software would be available for the Kindle Fire, an Android tablet, the Nook tablets from Barnes & Noble and Android phones worldwide.

The Android version of the app will come installed on Samsung?s Galaxy S III on each of the major American carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile USA and Sprint, the company said.

The move might create tension between the start-up and Apple, which handpicked Flipboard as one of its favorite apps of 2010. But Flipboard said it was necessary to expand the app?s audience.

?They would love for us to be iOS exclusive from now until the end of time,? said Evan Doll, a co-founder of Flipboard who previously worked at Apple as an iPhone engineer. ?But we?re trying to reach as big an audience as we can.?

?We?re trying to be Switzerland,? added Mike McCue, Flipboard?s chief executive.

Flipboard follows a trend of hot apps that started out as iOS exclusives but eventually decided to add Android. Instagram, which is in the process of being acquired by Facebook, started out with a camera app only for iPhones before moving to Android. And Smule, a startup that makes digital music apps for iPhone, recently added Android as well. All of these companies agree that Android brings in big numbers that can?t be ignored.

A bigger audience is not only important to Flipboard, but also to the publishers that are working with the company, because it increases the value of their content, Mr. McCue said. The publishers can sell ads that appear with their content in the app.

He added that making the app compatible with multiple operating systems and social networks helps safeguard Flipboard from competitors. Apple could produce a clone of Flipboard if it wanted to, but it would most likely only be compatible with Apple devices, and Google could do the same for only Android devices. ?Even if Apple built an exact replica of Flipboard, we hope that we?d be able to have that ecosystem be more valuable than any one competitor in that scenario,? Mr. McCue said.

'Brave,' 'Hunger Games' And The History Of Lady Archers

As Princess Merida joins the big-screen leagues of Katniss Everdeen, we look at the sport's storied past, in Hobnobbing.

A fiery bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine not named Katniss Everdeen? Color us intrigued!

This weekend, Pixar will take aim at the box-office bull's-eye with its first foray into the fairy-tale princess pic. "Brave" follows a young Scottish royal named Merida, who bucks her parents' wishes, insisting on paving her own path — with bow firmly in hand.

Of course, the animated flick is only the latest this year to feature an adept bow-woman (or bowman). There was Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in "The Avengers," William (Sam Claflin) in "Snow White and the Huntsman" and, our obvious favorite, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in "The Hunger Games." Unsurprisingly, this slew of big-screen portrayals has helped revive interest in the ancient sport, with more and more amateur archers sizing up their targets.

But let's be clear about one thing: Bow-besotted babes are nothing new. Lady archers have been around practically since the dawn of time. Follow me down their storied path:

Like most grand ideas, the concept of a woman and her bow has roots in Greek mythology. "Amazon" may be a compliment for a leggy lady nowadays, but maybe it shouldn't be, considering the ancient archers were often depicted with their left breast cut off to make wielding their weaponry simpler. The Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was also frequently pictured holding a bow and arrow (sans missing mammary glands).

Throughout the Middle Ages, archery served dual purposes: fending off enemies and hunting prey for sustenance. But by the Elizabethan era, it had become a posh pastime, with proper ladies learning the sport — along with dancing and riding — as part of their studies. (P.E. was soooo much cooler back then.) In fact, Queen Elizabeth I herself (daughter of Henry VIII) is said to have been a skilled archer.

A few hundred years later, the sport made its Olympics debut in 1900, with women taking up arms at the 1904 games. The event took a hiatus from the Games between 1920 and 1972, reappearing at the Munich Olympics. And while plenty of Hollywood heavyweights have learned the skill for a movie, one took it upon herself to learn for the sport of it. Actress Geena Davis made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Olympic trials in 1999, hoping to compete in the 2000 games in Sydney. The games and a gold medal were not in Davis' future, but she already has one gilded goody (namely, an Oscar) to console herself.

And speaking of actresses and archery, the last few decades have offered up a bumper crop of bow roles, from Gwyneth Paltrow in "Emma" to Saoirse Ronan in "Hannah." And, of course, Lawrence in "The Hunger Games."

All we have so say is, may the odds be ever in your favor, lady archers!

How to Handle a Long Distance Relationship? | Dating Advice

How to handle a long distance relationship?
Most of us are aware that the chances of a long distance relationship ending abruptly are very high. However, not many actually know how to save a long distance relationship.
No one actually starts a relationship just to have a relationship. Like any normal relationship, a long distance relationship might arise because two people who stay far apart meet on internet or become pen pals and it blossoms into something beautiful. Sometimes people who were together might have to move apart for a certain period of time because of work or other issues. No matter why you are in a long distance relationship it is important to know few things which will help you save your wonderful relationship that you have with partner. Here are some tips on how you can handle long term relationship?
? First and foremost find out why the relationship is most important. Remember just loving a person and not seeing any future in a relationship will not help you in anyways. Find a reason and make your resolve stronger. Only then can you really save anything in your life.
? Secondly try to be honest and open with your partner. Honesty is the best policy. If you have a problem or if you are not having a good day talk about it in every detail with your partner. This will encourage your partner to do the same with you. This way the bonds between you and your partner will become more and more stronger.
? Third thing is to establish a time where you both will talk to each other, each and every day. It is important that you respect that time. Only in unavoidable cases can you delay or skip the established time. But do not make it habit. Having an established time and committing to that time means both of you are ready to see your relationship to the end.
? The next thing to do is to have patience. If you do not have patience then long distance relationship is not for you. You need to have a lot of patience. You need to understand your partner and at the same time try to be the bigger person. As I said earlier if you do not have a firm resolve to save your relationship the strain might force you to break it up. So make your resolve firmer this will allow you to handle things calmly and patiently. Show that you are strong and this will give your partner the strength needed to carry on in a long distance relationship.
? Last but certainly not the least, do not give into temptation. Look if that relationship means anything then do not give into temptations. It is easy to hide things form your partner just because he or she is far away from you. Remember you reap what you sow, so try to be more mature and more firm in what you really want.
One must always remember the only way to make a long term relationship work is to try to find a solution so that you both can be together. If you do not see a future where you cannot be together then it is good to end it with honor. At least you will have a friend for your life. If you think you can be together and it is only a short time that you need to be away from your partner then try to do everything you can to make your relationship work.
